Alta council consents to appointments

The Alta City Council approved appointments for 2020 and dicussed the fiscal year 2021 budget and code enforcement job Jan. 6.

City council committees are:

•Personnel—Willie Lang and Pam Henderson.

•Code enforcement—Wes Bunjes and Les Mann.

•Recreation—Henderson and Tom Lane.

•Infrastrustructure—Lang and Lane.

•Housing and industrial development—Bunjes and Mann.

Appointments made were: Megan Peterson, city clerk; Gary Armstrong, city attorney; Kirk “Bubba” Reetz, fire chief; and Bunjes, mayor pro tem.

Regarding the budget, Peterson explained a city tax rate of $11.46 per $1,000 of assessed value from the current $10.59 rate. Approximately $66,000 is the estimated amount of additional revenue the city would get from property taxes at the proposed new tax rate for fiscal year 2021, compared to the current rate.

The reason the tax rate was discussed now is a state law, which requires a public hearing for maximum tax rate, said Peterson. The public hearing is Feb. 3 at 6 p.m. at city hall. A super majority of four yes votes is needed for passage.
