Assistants cherish roles as keys to success

Dean Lietz was a reserve when the Alta Cyclones stormed to Des Moines and won two contests in the class A boys’ basketball tournament. The 1975 team came home with the consolation trophy that year after a 66-59 win over Albert City-Truesdale.

In 2006, he was an assistant coach the next time the Cyclones made state, a 62-48 loss to Marquette Catholic of Bellevue.

The now Alta-Aurelia Warriors took an 18-4 record to Spirit Lake in search of their latest trip to the state boys’ basketball tourney.
