DOT, Alta discuss Highway 7 speed limits

The Alta City Council heard an update on the city’s effort to gain a reduction in the Iowa Highway 7 speed limit on the city’s west side at its Aug. 5 meeting.

Mayor Al Clark said the Iowa Department of Transportation has approved moving the 45 MPH sign west 300 feet, but will not move it until the city finds out if its current ordinance is acceptable or needs to be amended. The speed limit in that area was a concern of a resident at a July council meeting.

•City council members heard from two residents.

Jim Eaton shared his concern about what he views as neighbors encroaching on his property and sought action from city code enforcement officers. He also asked to burn trees on his property but Clark told him, per Iowa Department of Natural Resources, that he can’t burn trees within one-quarter mile of a residence.

Residents are allowed to burn brush, but not whole trees. Eaton indicated he plans to haul whole trees to the city’s waste pile, but Clark told him that whole trees are not accepted.
