Exhibit brings Else's Café memories to life

When Alta-Aurelia elementary fifth graders visit the Aurelia Hertiage Center next month, a display in the corner of the main room may catch their attention.

It is for Else’s Café, a landmark restaurant from the early 1900s to the 1980s. At the time of the town’s centennial in 1973, it had the title as one of the longest-running businesses. It stood standing until the wreckling ball came in 1991.  Nelson, who was born Jan. 15, 1899, died Sept. 9, 1990.

Else, a member of the Aurelia High School class of 1917,  was a college graduate and her June 3, 1919, college diploma from Iowa State Teachers College, now University of Northern Iowa, is part of the display.  She had one brother, Wesley, a salesman in Minneapolis,.
