Five candidates on the ballot for ISU Extension’s BV County Council

Voters will have the opportunity to elect four members of the Iowa State University Extension and Outreach Buena Vista County Council at the Nov. 3, 2020, general election.
ISU Extension and Outreach Buena Vista County educational programming is a cooperative effort involving local citizens, Iowa State University and the U.S. Department of Agriculture.
Extension council members are elected at large, and all voters in the county are eligible to vote for four candidates.  Candidates on this year’s ballot include: Landon Sullivan for re-election, Stephen Chambang, Amy Meyer, Valerie Olsen, and Roger Peterson.
Landon Sullivan lives in Storm Lake with his wife and two daughters.  He is a Professor of animal science at Buena Vista University.  Landon has served on the Buena Vista County Extension Council for one year and is seeking re-election. He has also served on other county and district fair boards, county Farm Bureau board, county and US Cattlemen’s Association, and had a prior appointment as an extension specialist.  Landon has been an asset to the Buena Vista County Extension Council and would like to continue building relationships and improve programming for youth and adults.
Stephen Chambang lives in Storm Lake with his wife and four children.  He is fluent in five languages and is a translator for Buena Vista Regional Medical Center and other organizations.  Stephen works on behalf of diverse groups to discover and make recommendations for advancement.  He is also the co-founder of Sudan Hope and Solar Development.  Stephen would like to serve on the BV County Extension Council to use his connections and knowledge to help with programming and to build relationships with diverse groups that are not familiar with Extension.
Amy Meyer is a sixth grade science teacher at Alta-Aurelia Middle School. She lives in Alta with her husband Jim.  They have two grown daughters, who grew up in the 4-H and FFA programs.  Amy is a past fair board member and 4-H leader.  She would like to serve on the Buena Vista County Extension Council because she was raised to always give back to your community and help in any way you can.
Valerie Olsen is a homemaker that lives in Newell with her husband and four children.  She wants to serve on the Buena Vista County Extension Council to better serve the BV County community specifically youth in agriculture.  Valerie believes she will be an asset to the BV County Extension Council due to her background in agriculture and education, time spent working with the FFA organization and working on the family farm with her husband.  
Roger Peterson was born and raised in Alta.  He has two sons and one daughter.  Roger is a retired math teacher and coach.  He currently substitute teaches at area schools.  Roger has served on the FCA Elevator Board, the BV Zoning Board, the Alta School Board, and was the district director for Iowa Association of Track Coaches, and the director of the Alta Summer Program.  He feels he could give back to the community by using his experience and knowledge on the Buena Vista County Extension Council.      
Extension council members whose terms expire this year are Melanie Bloom of Marathon, Paul Diehl of Storm Lake, Laura Sievers of Albert City, and Landon Sullivan of Storm Lake. Carryover council members whose terms continue beyond the end of 2020 are Craig Bean of Marathon, Roman De La Torre of Albert City, Miguel Negrete of Marathon, Salli Nichols of Storm Lake, and Jan Worthan of Storm Lake.
Successful candidates will take office in January 2021. Extension council members make programming and budget decisions for ISU Extension and Outreach in Buena Vista County. More information can be found at
