St. Paul Aurelia welcomes new pastor

St. Paul Lutheran Church of Aurelia has a new pastor in Rev. Derek Evans.

Rev. Evans’ first worship service was Jan. 14, one week after his installation.

“I’m still getting to know as many people in the church and the community as possible,” said Evans.

Evans comes to Aurelia from Woodburn and Artwerp, Ohio, where he worked for three years as pastor for a Lutheran church. He  had his first call as a pastor in Idaho.

Evans has a B.A. in communication from Concordia University in Austin, Texas, and a Masters of Divinity from Concord Seminary in St. Louis.

Evans been working with Rev. John Riggeert, who was in charge of both Cherokee’s Trinity Lutheran Church and St. Paul of Aurelia.

“We have a wonderful church and community, with several choirs, including hand bells and choirs,” said Evans.

The Aurelia church has about 130 members.

Evans, 37, and his wife, Becky, have two children, Annika, five, and Penelope, three, who could be seen enjoying the Aurelia snow last week. Rev. Evans lists running as a main hobby.

Church families had a chance to take in some ice fishing at a retreat at Camp Okoboki last week.

It’s also mid-season in the church dartball league, an activity for youth and adults.
