Warriors, Vikings make state record book

Alta-Aurelia and AHSTW Avoca’s football teams and hundreds of fans who took in the home Vikings’ 30-28 triple overtime win in the first round of the class A playoffs were watching history Oct. 26 in Avoca.

According to the Iowa High School Association record books, the contest was the 120th  playoff game to go into overtime. This counts eight-player classes and the sub-state experiment of several years ago.

For 2018’s first round on Oct. 26, there was only one other overtime game, as Newman Catholic of Mason City beat North Tama, Traer, 31-28, also in the same bracket.

Alta-Aurelia finished the year 7-3, while AHSTW (Avoca, Hancock, Shelby, Tennant and Walnut) moved on to the quarterfinals at 10-0.
