Year in Review 2017

Following is a review of 2017 Aurelia Star headlines from January through June.

January

According to the Iowa Department of Revenue, taxable retails sales in Cherokee and Buena Vista Counties increased for the fiscal year ending June 30, 2016, when compared to the previous year. Taxable retails sales in Cherokee County rose $353,163, while in Buena Vista County taxable retail sales rose $2,352,371.

Kirsten Muhmel was the winner of the Aurelia Public Library children’s quilt raffle.

Karla Meier of Ida Grove joined the Aurelia Star staff on Dec. 27. As the marketing representative, Meier will be the main contact source for all advertising and sales for the Aurelia Star.

Buena Vista County Extension and Outreach is celebrating its 100th anniversary in 2017. Each month, Extension will share stories about the history of Extension and activities in Buena Vista County.

The Alta City Council will begin reviewing and amending its fence ordinance after a discussion with a citizen at the Jan. 9 council meeting.

Neil Marshall, a graduate of Alta-Aurelia High School, is a finalist for the Duane Schroeder IIAC Male Scholar-Athlete Award. During his senior year at Buena Vista University, Marshall led the Iowa Conference in slugging percentage, on-base percentage, doubles, runs, total bases and plate appearances.
