Zimmerman enjoys weekend at space center

The annual regional Space Settlement Design Competition (SSDC) took place March 22-24 at NASA’s Johnson Space Center (JSC) in Houston, Texas. Alta-Aurelia High School senior Sam Zimmerman attended.

Zimmerman was part of the student design team from Texas, South Dakota, Nebraska and Iowa, and his group departed Sioux City via bus to Houston. They were one of four student engineer companies and, at the close of the competition, judges announced Zimmerman’s team was the winner.

“I thought the most interesting part of the trip was working with real professionals in their field. It isn’t every day that you get to talk to and work with someone that is one of the best at what they do, so it was very cool to work with the NASA engineering team. I spent most of my time planning the layout of our design, making sure we had room for everything that we needed and making sure that there was plenty of human resources,” said Zimmerman.
